Former Fayette County High School Athletic Director and Assistant Principal Darren A. Handley had his day in Fayette County Superior Court on Nov. 2. Handley was sentenced to five concurrent 10-year terms of probation and fines after paying $32,000 in restitution to the Fayette County Board of Education for stealing funds from several of the school’s athletic accounts in 2013.
Handley also had his day in court in Coweta County in 2014 where he entered a negotiated plea after being charged with theft from his former homeowners association.
Fayetteville Police Department spokesman Mike Whitlow in June 2013 said over the prior two years, “(Handley) was moving funds from one of the school-related accounts to the other. He oversaw the athletic-related accounts and he moved money from some of those. Eventually, he ended up with the money.”
Handley in Fayette County Superior Court on Nov. 2 entered a negotiated plea that resulted in receiving five concurrent 10-year probation sentences, a $2,000 fine and surcharges and 100 hours of community service, said Fayette County District Attorney Scott Ballard.
Ballard said Handley paid the Fayette County Board of Education $32,000 in restitution.
Handley in June 2014 in Coweta County faced a felony charge of theft by conversion from 2013 after being charged by Senoia police for stealing approximately $8,000 from the Springdale Homeowners Association for which he was treasurer.
A negotiated plea decreased the felony charge to misdemeanor theft by conversion after Handley paid $8,520 in restitution on the day of his trial. Handley was sentenced to one year probation with a $500 fine and $100 in court costs, according to Senoia police.
