Luther Ruben Knowles, 89, of Fayetteville passed away on September 13, 2016.  He was born and raised in Fayette County.

He proudly served his country during World War II in the United States Army.  Ruben was a former Mayor of Fayetteville, as well as a City Councilman. He also served as a County Commissioner in Fayette County.  He was a local businessman and was the owner of Knowles Texaco Station.  He also was a school bus driver for the Fayette County Board of Education for 22 years and the Warehouse Manager for the school system.  He was a farmer and home gardener.  He was a long-time member of Fayette First Baptist Church and a 60-year member of Fayetteville Masonic Lodge #711.  

Ruben was preceded in death by his parents, James Edward and Mae Lillie Knowles; and his siblings, Louise Winkles, Marvin Knowles, Edward Knowles, Gene Knowles and Harold Knowles.  He is survived by his wife of 72 years, Helen Stanley Knowles; his daughter, Janice Knowles Mock and her husband Jerry; his son, Michael Dennis Knowles and his wife Wendy; his grandchildren, Suzanne Mock; Jason Mock and wife Katie; Amanda Engle and husband, Todd; Tyler Knowles and Jessica Knowles; his great-grandchildren, Abigale Engle and Corbin Engle; his siblings, Dot Stanley, Betty Coker, Joyce Jones, Joan Wilson, Larry Knowles and Leon Knowles; and numerous nieces and nephews and extended family.  

The funeral service was held at 11 a.m. on Friday, September 16, 2016 at Fayetteville First Baptist Church, Overton Chapel, with Rev. Glenn Stringham and Rev. Jack Miller officiating.  Burial immediately followed the service at Camp Memorial Gardens, Fayetteville.  The family received friends from 2-4 p.m. and 6-8 p.m. on Thursday evening, September 15, 2016 at Mowell Funeral Home, Fayetteville.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to the Homebound Program at Fayetteville First United Baptist Church, 205 East Stonewall Avenue, Fayetteville, Ga. 30214.
