Pitts resigns, to get paid through end of this year

Fayetteville’s former Chief Scott Pitts will get paid through the end of the year after he tendered his resignation last week.

Pitts resigned Sept.1 after serving as chief since 2013. Maj. Jeff McMullan will serve as interim chief starting Sept. 1, said City Manager Ray Gibson.

Pitts was hired at interim police chief in April 2013 with 21 years in law enforcement and was appointed to the position permanently in November 2013.

In a copy of the separation agreement obtained by The Citizen, the city outlines the responsibilities that Pitts and the city will shoulder.

The city asks Pitts to make himself reasonably available by telephone to discuss pending cases or investigations that he was involved with during his tenure as chief.

In return, the city will pay the chief’s salary through Dec. 29, with a final payment on Jan. 17, 2017. He will be paid for any accrued leave obtained before Aug. 31, and his pension benefits will continue until Jan. 12, 2017.

Pitts also agrees to waive any claims that he may have had in the Age Discrimination in Employment Act. Pitts also agrees that any city information he has obtained will remain confidential for two years.

Pitts has 21 days to accept the agreement and a seven-day revocation period.
