All of Coweta is invited to attend the Bow Wow Meow Adoption Luau, scheduled for Saturday, Aug. 6, 10 a.m.-3 p.m.

This Hawaiian-themed event features sponsored pet adoptions designed to clear the Coweta County shelter of 200+ animals. The facility is located at 91 Selt Road in Newnan.

By and for the community, the event is co-hosted by Coweta County Animal Control and the Newnan-Coweta Humane Society. The Luau is free to attend, offers free parking, and is family-friendly. Pokémon Go players are welcome, and Pokémon have been spotted there.  Food, games, raffles, door prizes, and a live radio broadcast by 92.5 FM The Bear is planned.

“The generosity of more than 50 community sponsors have made it possible for the donation of kitten or dog food to the shelter to serve as adoption fee,” said Rachel Rine, vice president of NCHS and head of the Dog Program. “People interested in adopting a pet may donate a bag of kitten or dog food in lieu of the usual fee.”

The savings is substantial. Typically, the adoption fee for dogs is $126 and $70 for cats.

Adopted animals are fully vetted. Before going to their forever homes, they are examined by a veterinarian, spayed or neutered, dewormed, up-to-date on vaccines, and microchipped. Dogs are also checked for heartworms.

“Thanks to so many community sponsors, both businesses and individuals, we’re able to fund the adoption of more than 50 cats or kittens and dogs or puppies,” said Linda Earhart, president of the Newnan-Coweta Humane Society and head of the cat program. “Renters planning to adopt must bring written authorization from their landlord granting permission to have a cat or dog.”

It’s important to note that most adopted pets do not go home same day. They are released after spay/neuter surgery. Advance visits to animal control encouraged! If adopters want to pick out a pet in advance, they can arrive at 9 a.m. Saturday to complete the paperwork.
