A student from Tyrone will be featured in the upcoming WSB Care-a-Thon, a 37-hour radio event benefiting research and programs at the Aflac Cancer & Blood Disorders Center of Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta.
Brandon Worrell will be interviewed about his story battling sickle cell disease sometime during the broadcast, which begins at 5 a.m. July 11 and ends at 6 p.m. July 12 on News 95.5 and AM 750 WSB.
Brandon is 13 years old. He plays the trumpet in the symphonic band at Sandy Creek High School. Last year, he made district honor band. A gifted straight-A student, he was the overall winner of the Griffin RESA regional math competition.
Brandon also has sickle cell disease, a genetic disorder that affects hemoglobin in red blood cells that can lead to severe pain and serious health conditions.
He had a stroke when he was five years old and has been receiving chronic blood transfusions since 2008. He has been a patient at the Aflac Cancer & Blood Disorder Center of Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta since 2001.
Scott Slade, Clark Howard, Neal Boortz, Erick Erickson, Herman Cain, Dave Baker, Mark Arum, Jamie Dupree, and many other local radio personalities will host the WSB Care-a-Thon, which raised more than $1.5 million for the Aflac Cancer Center in 2015. Special guests include Dan and Kathelen Amos (Aflac and Aflac Foundation), Matt Ryan (Atlanta Falcons) and other Atlanta-based celebrities.
