Student safety concerns at Northgate High School in east Coweta County will be addressed with the installation of a pedestrian hybrid beacon on Fischer Road.

Acting on a request by the school due to the need for students to cross the roadway to access athletic fields, the Coweta County Commission on May 10 unanimously approved the construction and installation of a pedestrian hybrid beacon on Fischer Road at the campus of Northgate High.

“Given the volume of traffic on Fischer Road and the hazard to students attempting to cross the road, the school requested assistance with a solution to the issue,” said Director of Transportation and Engineering Tod Handley.

When activated by a pedestrian, the beacon will function similar to a typical traffic signal, requiring vehicular traffic on Fischer Road to stop while the students cross from one side of the road to the other, Handley said.

The low bid for the project was $64,400 by Wilburn Engineering LLC.
