The Fayette County government is announcing its second event for local residents with kayaks and canoes to assist with cleaning our water reservoirs. The program is called Water Guardians and the second lake cleanup will occur Saturday, May 28, 9-11 a.m.
The target area is Lake Horton in the southern part of Fayette County. It is vitally important to keep local water reservoirs clean of pollutants.
Commissioner Steve Brown will be leading the group. The county government will supply bottled water, trash bags and trash grabbers for picking up trash.
“We hauled quite a bit of trash out of Lake Kedron for our first clean-up event and had a good time doing it,” said Brown.
Each new Water Guardians participant who has not previously received a group T-shirt can receive one for free at the Lake Horton project if they sign-up by May 18.
In accordance with lake rules, no one under age 14 is allowed to operate a kayak or canoe solo. All participants must have a life vest and everyone will be asked to sign a liability waiver in order to take part.
There is also a need for small jon boats to bring the full trash bags back to the boat docks.
“It is wonderful when citizens come together to clean and protect our water supply,” said Lee Pope, Water System director.
To register for this event, send an email to WaterGuardians@fayettecountyga.gov and include your name, daytime phone number, contact email address and T-shirt size.
In the event of rain, a makeup date will be given by email.
Other lake cleanups will be announced in the coming months.
