Nurses at Piedmont Newnan Hospital surprised Dana Welch, a local mother of three who has been hospitalized for six weeks, with a day of pampering.

Welch is set to deliver her fourth child – a baby girl – Sunday, Dec. 6. She was admitted to the hospital at 27 weeks pregnant with premature rupture of membranes, a condition in which the membraned sac holding the baby and the amniotic fluid breaks before going into labor.

Welch has been on bed rest at Piedmont Newnan ever since.

“I was pretending to be on Survivor while on bed rest just trying to make it day to day,” said Welch, who is a big fan of the hit reality show and wore a Survivor buff mailed to her by a friend. “No survivor should be without one,” Welch recalls the friend saying.

That’s when Kyle Brandes, RN, and a few other labor and delivery nurses at Piedmont Newnan decided to team up with Headlines Hair and Nail Salon to surprise Welch, a true survivor, by bringing the salon to her hospital room. She was treated to a cut and color in celebration of the upcoming birth of her child.

“Taking care of patients like Dana, with her constant positive outlook, loving spirit and bright smile, makes being a nurse worthwhile,” Brandes said. “So glad we could make her feel like the beautiful person she is!”
