Mary Sue “Susie” Martin, 80, of Fayetteville, passed away Monday, October 12, 2015, at Southwest Christian Care in Union City.
Susie was born in Decatur, Alabama on September 26, 1935 to MayBelle and Leonard Robertson. She was raised and educated in Anderson, Indiana and graduated from Ball State University with a BS in English and a Music Minor. She was a member of the Alpha Sigma Alpha Sorority. Upon moving to Atlanta after marriage, she taught at Druid Hills High School, was a member of the Junior League and Atlanta’s First United Methodist Church.
Susie retired from the Fayette County School System where she made lifetime friends and taught 8th grade English for 22 years. She also taught piano to many of Fayette County’s youth and was a member of Community Christian Church. She loved music, poetry, collecting books and art, college football, traveling and being surrounded by family. She has been an example of strength and grace to all who knew her.
Susie was preceded in death by her husband of 38 years, Derrel C. Martin. She is survived by daughters, Teresa Horlacher of Peachtree City and Melanie Smith (Brad) of Canton; her grandchildren, Matthew Horlacher of Peachtree City, Caroline Horlacher (Tom) of Jacksonville, FL, Katie Horlacher of Kennesaw, Brad Smith, Jr. (Sarah) of Bexley, Ohio, Derek Smith (Emily) of Columbus, Ohio and Annabelle Smith of Atlanta; her great-grandchildren, Norah and Adeline Smith of Bexley, Ohio, and George and Evangeline Smith of Columbus, Ohio; her brother-in-law, Jerry Martin (Norma); her nephew, Mike Martin; her nieces, Sandra Martin and Angela Jones (Bobby); her great-niece, Kate Martin; her great-nephews, Toby and Wyatt Jones; and her special friends and caregivers, Carolyn Scott, Garcia Gayle and Jackie Jozan.
Susie’s funeral was held Saturday, October 17, 2015, in the Chapel of Mowell Funeral Home, Fayetteville. Interment followed at Westminster Memorial Gardens, Peachtree City. The family received friends Saturday prior to the service.
