Unemployment is on the rise

Unemployment numbers are creeping up in Fayette and Coweta counties, with Fayette’s jobless rate for June at 5.7 percent and Coweta’s at 5.6 percent. Though rising since May, those rates are far better than the numbers one year ago.

The Georgia Department of Labor is reporting that Fayette County’s unemployment rate for June was 5.7 percent. That compares to a rate of 5.4 in May and a 6.8 percent rate a year ago. Fayette has 3,080 people unemployed in a workforce of 54,361.

In Coweta County, the June numbers showed a 5.6 percent jobless rate. The unemployment rate in May was 5.4 percent while the June 2014 rate was 6.7 percent. Coweta has a workforce of 66,790 with 3,790 people out of work in June.

Jobless rates in June also crept up in Peachtree City and Newnan. Peachtree City’s 5.1 percent rate in May rose slightly to 5.3 percent in June. Peachtree City’s jobless rate in June 2014 was 6.5 percent.

Similarly in Newnan, the 5.9 percent jobless rate in May rose to 6.1 percent in June. The unemployment rate in Newnan a year ago stood at 7.5 percent.

Jobless numbers for the 10-county Atlanta Regional Commission area, which includes Fayette, had a June unemployment rate of 6 percent. That compares to a 5.9 percent rate in May and a 7.3 percent rate in June 2014.

Unemployment figures for the Three Rivers Commission area, which includes Coweta, showed a 6.7 percent rate in June, preceded by a 6.4 percent rate in May and an 8.3 percent rate a year ago.

Statewide, Georgia’s jobless rate for June was tallied at 6.4 percent. That compares to a 6.1 percent rate in May and a 7.7 percent rate a year ago.
