Nicole Gagnier, a Tyrone resident and 2011 graduate of Our Lady of Mercy, has been named the New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC ) Volleyball Athlete of the Year as a senior setter for the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) team.

Gagnier received the honor by a vote of the league’s coaches.

She led the conference in assists per set (10.58) and assists (1,291) while ranking No. 16 and No. 23 in the nation in those categories.

She guided an offense that was No. 14 in the country in hitting percentage and led the Engineers to a 28-6 record, finishing regular season play undefeated at home, which culminated in a trip to the NCAA tournament.

She finished the season named to the NEWMAC All-Conference First Team, NEWMAC Academic All Conference, AVCA New England All-Region Team, New England Women’s Volleyball Association (NEWVA) All New England First Team, and an AVCA All American Honorable Mention.

Gagnier had one last chance to don the MIT’s cardinal and grey, representing MIT at the NEWVA Senior All Star Classic Dec. 7, at which she was named Most Valuable Player (MVP).

NEWMAC is an association of 11 selective academic institutions committed to providing high quality competitive athletic opportunities for student-athletes.
