Julie Bedson, a senior at McIntosh High School, earned the Girl Scout Gold Award for identifying, planning and completing the building of a pet cemetery in Peachtree City.
Bedson identified a need for the cemetery and proceeded to gain the necessary support, permits and donations to build the Saint Andrew’s-in-the Pines Pet Remembrance Garden.
Members of the church youth group, Julie’s girl scout troop and some boy scouts assisted in completing the garden in time for the blessing of the animals and dedication of the garden on October 4, commemorating the birthday of St. Francis, patron saint of animals.
Donations included a statue of St. Francis, iron fencing and gate, and a commemorative plaque.
Girl Scouts must complete two journeys, or action projects, to earn Bronze and Silver Awards before qualifying to earn the Gold Award. Julie has been active with the Girl Scouts for 13 years.
