The beginning of the year 5775 on the Hebrew Calendar is marked by Rosh Hashanah, the start of The High Holy Days. It begins with the blowing of the Shofar, a ram’s horn, and is observed by Jews all around the world.

Rosh Hashanah begins at sundown today, Sept. 24 and continues for two days.

The event will be observed at two locations in Fayette County. Congregation B’nai Israel will usher in the new year with an 8 p.m. service Wednesday at its location on Ga. Hwy. 54 near Corinth Road (east of Fayetteville towards Jonesboro), B’nai Israel will conduct a children’s service, and the chorus will fill the synagogue with a joyful noise. A dairy lunch will be provided after the service on Rosh Hashanah. Rabbi Louis Feldstein will lead all services.

Chabad of Peachtree City will kick off its celebration of the Jewish New Year with the annual Rosh Hashanah family meal on Wednesday, Sept. 24. Services will be at 7:30 p.m. with the meal following at 8.

Celebrations will continue throughout the week at both locations and will conclude with Yom Kippur, the Day of Atonement on Oct. 4.

Yom Kippur is the most important of the Jewish holidays and includes fasting, prayer and the lighting of the Yahrzeit candle in memory of those who have died.
