Elementary students in six schools across the county participated in the American Heart Association’s Jump Rope for Heart event last year, raising over $7,500 in the fight against heart disease.
Fayette schools that participated in the 2014 campaign include Cleveland Elementary, Crabapple Lane Elementary, Inman Elementary, Sara Harp Minter Elementary, and Spring Hill Elementary. The goal this year is to have 100 percent participation.
Jump Rope for Heart is a national fundraising event sponsored by the American Heart Association and the American Alliance for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance. Funds raised are used to support lifesaving heart and stroke research and education.
The event takes place in February (American Heart Health Month) either during P.E. class, or before or after school. In addition to jumping rope, students are engaged in lessons about heart disease, the basics of heart health, and how they can incorporate healthy habits into their daily lives.
Students receive “thank you” gifts based on the dollars they raise; schools can also earn gift certifications for P.E. equipment from U.S. Games.
