Newnan is set to begin a number of sidewalk and paving projects. Totaling $861,000, the majority of the cost will be funded by special purpose local option sales tax (SPLOST) revenues.
City engineer William Klahr said beginning July 21, Construction 57, Inc. will begin constructing approximately 3,285 linear feet of new, five- foot sidewalks along four roads in Newnan. Those include the south side of First Avenue from Buchannan Street to La Grange Street, the south side of Roscoe Road from Sherwood Drive to Christian Drive, the west side of Saint Clair Street from Spring Street to Wesley Street, and the north side of East Washington Street from the railroad to Farmer Street, Williams said.
The contract price for construction using local sales tax-funded project is $318,224. The contractor has 180 days to substantially complete the work.
Williams said road maintenance will begin on July 28. Blount Construction Company, Inc will begin milling and resurfacing 11 roads totaling 2.79 centerline miles. The projects include Robert Duke Place from La Grange Street to Sunny South Street, Nimmons Street from La Grange Street to Greenville Street, Woodlane Drive from Woodbine Circle to the end of the road, Standish Court from Dewey Street to Calhoun Street, Dixon Street from Temple Avenue to Elm Circle, Elm Circle from Dixon Street to Dixon Street, Berry Avenue from Farmer Street to Augusta Drive, Augusta Drive from Berry Avenue to Jefferson Street, Edgewood Drive from Christian Drive to Fontaine Drive, Richard Allen Drive from Temple Avenue to West Washington Street and College Street from Spring Street to Clark Street.
Williams said excess layers of asphalt will be milled off prior to placing a new lift of asphalt, with final grade matching the existing gutter where practical. He said the contractor will work to finish Nimmons Street, Dixon Street and Elm Circle before the start of the school year. Utility adjustments ahead of the milling operations have begun on Nimmons Street, Williams said.
Thermoplastic traffic striping, including a double-yellow centerline, stop bars and crosswalks and reflective raised pavement markings will be installed following paving, said Williams.
Also partially funded by local sales tax revenues, the contract price for the road maintenance work is $542,945. The Ga. Dept. of Transportation is assisting with funding the project through the Local Maintenance Improvement Grant program (LMIG) to the amount of $260,000.00. The contractor has 120 days to substantially complete the work.
