It was a way to help bring a recognition and appreciation of history into the present. The General Daniel Newnan chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) recently donated more than 1,200 pocket copies of the U.S. Constitution to 4th and 5th grade students at Coweta County elementary schools.
Marking the occasion of Constitution Day, DAR members distributed copies of the Constitution to students at the county’s 13 elementary schools on Sept. 9-13.
“We’re just trying to get as many students as we can, we feel it is important,” said local DAR member Elizabeth Cole, adding that the organization wanted to distribute a pocket copy of the Constitution to the children prior to Constitution Day on Sept. 17.
“Mrs. Cole brought our students some wonderful pocket Constitutions of their own, flag stickers and activity suggestions,” said Willis Road 4th grade teacher Noel Smith, whose classroom entrance includes several American flags. “I try to instill in my students the pride and respect for our country that is befitting the greatest country in the world. My kids can tell from the moment they approach my door that I am all about being patriotic.”
