No contests in Fayetteville, so city election canceled

Qualifying has ended in Fayetteville, and there are no contested races for the three open City Council posts.

As a result, the city election is canceled, according to Fayette County Elections Supervisor Tom Sawyer.

Perhaps the most noteworthy thing to come out of the qualifying period is that longtime Councilmen Walt White and Larry Dell will not be seeking re-election.

The three-day period last week ended with 53-year-old aviation safety inspector Scott Stacy qualifying for the Post 3 seat now held by White and 75-year-old Chattahoochee Hills Administrator Jim Williams qualifying for the Post 4 seat now held by Dell.

Rounding out the qualifying was Post 5 Councilman Paul Oddo, who also will face no opposition.

The qualifying period is over, but the ability to register for the November election is not. The deadline for registration for the November election is Oct. 7.

It will be in November that Fayetteville voters and those from around Fayette County will have their say on the 2-year core infrastructure SPLOST (Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax) initiative. If successful, Fayetteville’s portion of the SPLOST revenues is expected to generate approximately $6.75 million for public safety, water and sewer, stormwater and transportation needs.
