Fayetteville work crews on Wednesday were putting the finishing touches on the repair of a sinkhole that developed along Ga. Highway 85 just south of Ga. Highway 54 adjacent to the Fayette County government complex.

The sinkhole near the county complex and across from Johnson Street developed due to an old water line that began leaking.

Fayetteville City Manager Joe Morton said city employees met with Ga. Dept. of Transportation staff on Tuesday. After initially investigating the matter it did not appear at the time to be a water or sewer issue. At approximately 10 p.m. on Tuesday night the roadway caved in. But after water personnel arrived on scene it was discovered that there was an old water line leaking and thus caused the problem, said Morton.

Water and Public Works personnel worked throughout the night repairing the leak and securing the sinkhole. The plan is to pour concrete on Wednesday and hopefully repave on Thursday, Morton said.
