Winds cause havoc, damage in Coweta

A fast-moving storm packing high winds made its way through Coweta County the evening of March 18. The storm damaged half a dozen homes and downed numerous power lines and trees but resulted in no injuries.

Coweta County Emergency Management Agency Director Jay Jones said the Monday night storm resulted in more than 100 calls countywide reporting both trees and power lines downed by high winds. Jones said the storm also damaged six homes, Jones said, adding that damage occurred in locations around the county.

“But there were no injuries,” Jones said of the storm that produced golf ball-sized hail in the Grantville and Powers Crossroads areas of west and southwest Coweta.

Jones said the county’s emergency operation center was activated at 5 p.m. to monitor the storm as it approached from the west and made its way across the county.

Also Monday night, high winds, and a possible tornado, ripped through portions of Pike County south of Coweta. No injuries directly related to the storm were reported, according to reports.
