An 8-year-old Newnan boy died October 19 after crashing an all-terrain vehicle on Pate Road, the same road where he lived.

According to the Coweta County Sheriff’s Office, deputies were dispatched to the 100 block of Pate Road at approximately 4:15 p.m. following a report of an ATV accident involving a child.

Coweta County Sheriff’s Deputy Jacob Herbert, the department’s public information officer, told The Citizen that the boy was driving the four-wheeler on Pate Road when the crash occurred. No other vehicles or people were involved in the accident, Herbert said.

A Coweta County Sheriff’s deputy arrived just three minutes after the emergency call was received and immediately began lifesaving measures. The deputy continued those efforts until emergency medical personnel arrived and took over the child’s care.

The boy was pronounced dead shortly afterward.

Herbert confirmed that the child lived on Pate Road. The child’s identity has not been released by the Sheriff’s Office.

Georgia State Patrol Investigating

The investigation has been turned over to the Georgia State Patrol’s Specialized Collision Reconstruction Team, which handles serious and fatal crashes, including those involving four-wheelers.

The circumstances that caused the crash have not been released. Herbert could not confirm whether the child was wearing a helmet.

Any determination about possible charges would depend on the investigation. Herbert said the Sheriff’s Office has turned over responsibility for the case to the Georgia State Patrol.

The Coweta County Sheriff’s Office expressed condolences to the child’s family and loved ones following the accident.
