The Coweta County Commission and the Senoia City Council have approved an intergovernmental agreement that will lead to the establishment of a future active recreation park in the Senoia area. The new park will be designated as the Leroy Johnson Park.
The agreement calls for the city to purchase the future park property and to provide a warranty deed to the county. The county will be responsible for the park’s operation. The agreement also calls for initial construction to begin within three years.
The agreement calls for the acquisition of a minimum of 50 acres for the new park site. The potential site is located on Senoia’s west side and north of Ga. Highway 16.
The agreement notes that the existing Leroy Johnson Park on Howard Road that was established in 1978 as a baseball and softball facility is in need of improvements and that both the cost of expansion and the limitations of expanding the existing facility would far outweigh the benefits of those improvements at the current site.
“To meet the goals of active recreation in the city and surrounding unincorporated areas of the county the master plan recommends the development of a ‘future community park’ to meet active recreation needs,” the agreement said.
Votes by both governments earlier this week gave approval to the joint venture and the agreement to develop the master plan.
