Mrs. Virginia “Ginny” Rookus Joyner, age 88, of Peachtree City, Ga. passed away Thursday, Jan. 17, 2013.
Ginny was born in Grand Rapids, Mich. on April 27, 1924, daughter of the late Peter Nelsen Rookus and Carrie Bell Jensen Rookus.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Woodrow Harrison Joyner and brother Peter Nelson Rookus, Jr.
After graduating in 1942 from Bay City Central High School, Mrs. Joyner attended The University of Tennessee, where in 1944 she was initiated into the Kappa Chapter of Phi Mu. She was a devoted homemaker, wife and mother. Ginny enjoyed her bridge and garden clubs, as well as travel and music. She was very talented, excelled in cooking, sewing, painting and decorating. Known for her gracious hospitality, Ginny’s home was often the site for many festive gatherings, especially during the holidays where family and friends alike were always welcomed.
In 1970 she joined the First Baptist Church of Peachtree City as a Charter member and served on the first building committee, where she organized and assisted in the furnishing, decorating and Sunday service flowers of the new church. Later, she started an organ fund that enabled the church to purchase its first organ. She also took an active roll in the choir and occasionally sang solo and duet performances. Ginny was a member of the Friendship Sunday School Class and loved being a part of the Christian fellowship.
She is survived by her son, Gregory Lynn Joyner and his wife, Anne, of Peachtree City; son, Jeffrey Alan Joyner and his wife Sherry of Canby, Ore., son Rodney Harrison Joyner of Peachtree City; sister Mrs. Lovell R. Frank of Bay City, Mich.; five grandchildren, five great-grandchildren and a host of other relatives.
The family will receive friends on Sunday, January 20, 2013 from 4 to 6 p.m. at Carl J. Mowell & Son, 200 Robinson Road, Peachtree City.
A funeral service will be held Monday, January 21, 2013 at 11 a.m. at the Peachtree City Chapel of Mowell Funeral Home with burial immediately following at Westminster Memorial Gardens, Peachtree City.
