A long-time Tyrone resident recently completed one of the most challenging hikes offered in the state of Georgia: the famous “three miles up and three miles down” at Currahee Mountain in Toccoa.

Barbara Wolfe, 82, insists it wasn’t that big of an accomplishment, because she walks about two miles a day when she doesn’t have other yard work to do such as raking leaves and the like.

The truth is that the hike up Currahee is indeed a challenge, particularly in the last half mile prior to reaching the peak. Wolfe admitted that she didn’t pay as much attention to the scenery on the way up because she was busy watching her steps.

If you’ve heard of Currahee Mountain, it’s most likely because of the attention it was given in the HBO series “Band of Brothers” which portrayed how the mountain was used as a training ground for paratroopers who ran the trail.

The peak is some 1,800 feet up and Currahee Mountain is part of the Blue Ridge mountain chain.

“When your ears popped, you know you’ve gone a good distance,” Wolfe said. “It was very pretty. The birds, one came by and it made you realize how high up you are. … It’s very impressive and I think most people would enjoy it.

Wolfe said she also enjoyed visiting the Currahee Military Museum in Toccoa which she said was also worth the trip.

“It was a beautiful, wonderful day to go,” Wolfe said. “The weather was real nice and we chatted a good little bit and enjoyed the trip.”
