The Peachtree City Police Department is accepting donations that will be sent Friday to victims of Hurricane Sandy in the northeast.

The department is seeking bottled water, clothing including socks, underwear, long sleeve shirts and coats as well as toiletries including toothbrushes, toilet paper, soap and the like. The department cannot accept monetary donations for this relief effort.

The donations are needed by Thursday, Nov. 8 and may be dropped off at the police headquarters on Ga. Highway 74 South. The department is thankful in advance for any assistance the community can provide in this endeavor.

The department is working with a non-profit disaster relief agency which will be transporting the supplies Friday.

Citizens who wish instead to provide a monetary donation to a relief effort are encouraged to visit a list maintained by CNN that provides good advice on the matter at www.cnn.com/2012/10/30/us/iyw-how-to-help-after-sandy/index.html.

The hurricane destroyed thousands of homes and businesses, leaving millions without power as well. A host of disaster relief organizations from the Southern Baptist Convention to the American Red Cross and the Federal Emergency Management Agency have descended on the area in an effort to provide for victims who were severely impacted by the storm.
