Edgar “Ed” Robert O’Brien, age 94, of Peachtree City, Ga., passed away on Monday, September 17, 2012.
Born in New York in 1918, he started playing piano and trumpet at an early age and played with the Briggs Brothers Orchestra for several years. He worked for Edgcomb Steel in Milford, Conn. for 32 years and retired from there as president of the company in 1978. He joined the Racebrook County Club in Connecticut and served as vice president and director of the Milford Chamber of Commerce, director of the YMCA, director of the American Association of Industrial Management, vice president and director of the New Haven Quinnipiac Council of the Boy Scouts of America.
After moving to Georgia he volunteered many years as an assistant to the Chaplain at the Christian City Convalescent Home. He also founded the Community Literacy Action group in Fayette County. In 1994 he was recognized as Fayette County Volunteer of the Year.
Ed is survived by his wife of 68 years, Margaret Elizabeth “Betty” Grazier O’Brien; son, Ric O’Brien; and daughters, Kathy Terwilliger and Judith Bruner; 5 grandchildren; and 7 great grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held at St. Andrews in the Pines Episcopal Church on Friday, September 21, 2012 at 9:30am. The family will visit with friends after the service.
