It will not be long before voters have their say when it comes to local elections. Those qualifying by press time on Sept. 1 included mayoral and council candidates in Senoia, Sharpsburg and Palmetto.
Senoia voters in November will decide on two council positions. As of press time on Sept. 1 there were four people who had qualified for the two seats currently held by Maurice Grover and Bobby Graham.
Qualifiers include Grover, Graham, retired Col. Don Rehman and IBM technical support staff Harry Ramos.
Voting in Senoia is at-large with the top two vote-getters winning the seats.
The Senoia qualifying period was set to expire at noon on Sept. 2.
Down the road in Sharpsburg there will be no election needed. The reason is that Mayor Wendell Staley was the only person to qualify for that position. And as for the two council seats up for re-election, Councilwoman Celene Davenport was the only person to qualify for the Post 3 seat and former Mayor and Councilman Derrick McElwaney was the only person to qualify for the Post 1 seat. Incumbent Connie Turner in Post 1 did not qualify.
And in Palmetto, voters will have several candidates to choose from for mayor and three council seats.
Former Mayor Clark Boddie qualified and is expected to square-off with Mayor John Miller, though Miller had not qualified by press time.
Like Senoia, Palmetto’s council seats are at-large, with the top vote-getters winning the seats. And in Palmetto’s case there will be three seats up for grabs in November. Qualifying by press time were incumbents Lorraine Allen and Leon Sumlin, senior center director Patty O’Hara Willey and Chattahoochee Hills public works director and former Palmetto Councilman Larry Parrott. Incumbent Natalie McFadden had not qualified by press time.
Those interested in qualifying in Palmetto have until 4:30 p.m. on Sept. 2.
