After students settle into their routines following the start of school on August 8, parents and the community will have their opportunity to get schooled beginning in September.

The CARE (Children at Risk in Education) program of the Fayette County Public School System is offering free workshops to all parents, educators and community members.

The first workshop is a four-part series starting on September 1, 2011 and ending March 29, 2012. Each series runs from 4-6:30 pm and will be held in the media center (Building A) of the LaFayette Educational Center located at 205 LaFayette Avenue in Fayetteville. Topics covered include: “Understanding Immigration,” September 1; “Current Medications and Therapies in Treating ADD/ADHD and Mood Disorders,” November 17; “Stress Control and Self Care,” February 2; and “Behavioral Strategies for Classroom Management,” March 29.

Parents and community members can sign up by calling the CARE office, 770-460-3990, ext. 264. School system employees can register online using PDExpress on the FCBOE intranet site.

STEP (Systematic Training for Effective Parenting) workshops are designed to help persons gain confidence in their approach to parenting, better understand their child’s behavior, and learn strategies to help teach their children how to be responsible for their behaviors. The 10-week course begins September 13 and meets on Tuesdays through November 15 from 6:30-8 p.m. at Fayetteville Intermediate School.

Parents can sign up for STEP by printing and completing a registration form at www.fcboe.org and returning it to their child’s school counselor. Questions regarding STEP can be directed to the CARE office, 770-460-3990, ext. 264.
