Students’ skills earn awards at state competition; two headed for national conference

Six Sandy Creek High students earned gold, silver and bronze medals at the SkillsUSA State Leadership and Skills Conference for their abilities in the areas of Job Skill Demonstration, Graphic Design and Communication, Extemporaneous Speaking, and Automotive Service and Diesel Equipment Technology.

Bringing home gold medals were Gavin Baswell (Job Skill Demonstration) and Chanelle Smith-Walker (Georgia SkillsUSA Brochure).

Silver winners include Chanelle Smith-Walker (Georgia SkillsUSA Promotional Graphic) and Marissa Shenkle (Extemporaneous Speaking).

Bronze medals went to Robbie Chontos (Graphic Communications), Jason Fore (Automotive Service Technology), and Donovan Ivey (Diesel Equipment Technology).

Gold medal winner Gavin Baswell, along with his instructor/advisor, Matt Turner, will compete at the SkillsUSA National Leadership and Skills Conference in Kansas City, MO in June.

Addie Davis, current Sandy Creek High SkillsUSA chapter president and state treasurer, was elected to a slate of officers for another year of service at the state level. She, along with her instructor/advisor, Jeff Dykes, will represent SkillsUSA Georgia as a member of the State Officer Team.

Additional students who competed at the state level include: Rachel Barnes (Pre-school Teaching Assistant), Haley Hester (Photography), Saridh Galvan (Math Concepts 9th/10th Grade), Alex Lynch (Job Skill Demonstration), Jonathan Strickland (Screen Printing), and Alex Whitlock (Automotive Brakes).

Support from the following local industry partners helped send Sandy Creek’s SkillsUSA members to competitions this year: Cooper Lighting, Mercedes-Benz of South Atlanta, Theo Automotive, Tri-Star Automotive, and Gunnin Graphics.
