Piedmont Newnan Hospital explored the idea of changing its name when the new eight-story replacement hospital on Poplar Road opens for business next spring. But responses from those participating in a community survey led to the decision to retain the name.

Piedmont Healthcare Media Relations representative Jim Taylor said the community survey was initiated through an advisory council of local citizens that was formed after Piedmont Healthcare worked with the Newnan Hospital in 2006 to finalize the acquisition of the current hospital facility and the plan for a replacement facility.

“Because at the time Piedmont had not announced the name it would give to the acquired hospital or the replacement facility, the advisory council asked that the community be allowed to offer opinions as to a name,” said Taylor. ”Piedmont agreed to do so, and accordingly, in late 2010, Piedmont Newnan Hospital invited the community to participate in a naming survey.”

Taylor said the subsequent survey was taken by several hundred residents of Coweta County and the surrounding areas.

“Interestingly enough, the results of our survey were inconclusive, with approximately half of the respondents favoring a name change, and the other half of the respondents preferring no change,” said Michael Bass, Piedmont Newnan Hospital president and CEO. “After evaluating several factors, including the community survey results, we have decided to keep the Piedmont Newnan Hospital name.”

Bass also thanked residents who participated in the survey.

“One of the most poignant messages we heard is that the community wants to be certain we are providing the very best healthcare services, regardless of our name,” said Bass. “As we plan for the future of healthcare with our replacement hospital facility, as well as take care of our community members in our current facility today, we are diligently working to ensure we live up to those expectations.”

Construction on the new hospital facility on Poplar Road is well underway. Taylor said the new hospital is expected to open in spring 2012.

The new hospital is situated on 105 acres along Poplar Road near I-85. At 362,376 square feet, the 136-bed hospital will have 14 post-partum beds, 18 critical care beds and 104 general medical/surgical patient beds. The facility also will feature eight operating rooms and 23 patient rooms in the Emergency Department.

The hospital will utilize sustainable building strategies such as energy efficiencies and water reuse and conservation technologies in an effort to reduce future operating costs, provide a healthier work environment, and reduce the overall environmental impact of the project, according to hospital reports. It has been designed to comply with the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Green Building Rating System.
