Emily Erwin Sweet, age 72, passed away in Peachtree City, Georgia on Sunday, December 19th, 2010 after a prolonged and courageous battle with colon cancer.

She was born in November 1938 in Concord, NC , attended Concord High School, and graduated from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Medical Technology. She completed the Georgia Master Gardener course and was a certified Paralegal.

Emily was married for 32 years. As a military spouse she moved often, living throughout the eastern United States, Washington, Kansas, Missouri and Texas, and resided in Italy, Belgium and Japan before settling down in Peachtree City in 1990. Emily was a vivacious lady who loved nature and being outdoors. She enjoyed traveling, genealogy, walking with her dog, gardening and spending time with her family and friends. Active within the Carriage Lane Presbyterian Church since 1992, Emily regularly attended Sunday School services. She was also a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution and Central United Methodist Church in Concord, NC .

She is survived by her sons, Nathan Sweet of Atlanta, Georgia and Jonathan Sweet and his wife, Ronda, of Burke, Virginia; grandchildren, Steven and Rebecca Sweet of Burke, Virginia; brother, Albert Rich Erwin Jr. and his wife Denise of Madison, Wisconsin; niece, Christa Erwin of Seattle, Washington; and her extended family – lifelong best friend, Dotty Johnson of Jacksonville, Florida, cousin Caroline Greer of Spartanburg, South Carolina, and Junsuke Koike, his wife Kana, and their children Mayuko and Yuta of Tokyo, Japan. Emily was preceded in death by her parents, Albert Rich Sr. and Lois Lee Erwin of Concord, North Carolina .

Emily’s family would like to thank all of her friends in Peachtree City and the nurses and staff of the Piedmont Fayette Hospital Cancer Center for their compassion, love and acts of kindness during her fight against cancer. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to the American Cancer Society or the National Parkinson Foundation.

Emily’s memorial service will be held at the Carriage Lane Presbyterian Church in Peachtree City at 11:00 AM, Thursday, December 23rd, 2010. The Reverend Dr. W. Douglas Griffith will officiate. The family will receive friends after the funeral service in the Fellowship Hall. Emily will be buried at the Oakwood Cemetery in Concord, North Carolina.
