Hold on Peachtree City. There is about to be some activity in the “baby Kroger” parking lot at the Peachtree Crossing shopping center on Ga. Highway 54.
The new non-profit Fresh South Market will be set up and open for business on the first and third Saturdays and every Wednesday from May until November.
Similar to a mini-farmer’s market, Fresh South Market organizer Tricia Mahoney said the operation will feature local growers and vendors of fresh, whole foods. The market will be open on the 1st and 3rd Saturdays beginning May 1 from 8 a.m. until 1 p.m. and every Wednesday from 8 a.m. until 1 p.m. There is a possibility of having the market open on additional Saturdays, Mahoney said.
Saturday events will also include demonstrations by area chefs at 10:30 a.m. and, at the end of the season, a celebrity chef “cook-off.”
Mahoney said the market will be set up in what was the area of the baby Kroger parking lot closer to Hwy. 54 between BB&T Bank and Wachovia Bank at the corner of Peachtree Parkway so that passing motorists can more easily see the tents and the activities.
“It has been my personal project to get this going. I think the timing and the economy is right for this to work,” Mahoney said, noting her support of the continuing spread of the concepts and benefits of the global Slow Food movement. “The Peachtree City Development Authority has been very helpful and the Peachtree Crossing merchants have been very supportive.”
Mahoney, an advocate of eating sustainably and frugally, said the idea for the effort came from research she did for a master’s program.
Slow Food is an international movement founded by Carlo Petrini in 1986. The idea behind the movement is to preserve traditional and regional cuisine and promote the farming of plants, seeds and livestock in a local ecosystem.
