Local author and retired Fayette County teacher Stella Cooper Mitchell returns to center stage at the Fayette County Public Library in Fayetteville on Saturday, Mar. 6 at 1 p.m., to read from her hilarious new book, “Normal.” The reading is free and open to the public. The audience will have an opportunity to ask questions and enjoy complimentary light refreshments. The author will sign copies of the book, which will be on sale at the event.
Stella Cooper Mitchell, or “Miss Stella,” as she is fondly known, continues to pursue her lifelong goal of making people laugh. Her first two novels, “Walking Ivy’s Path,” and “The Original Big Hair Girls,” introduced readers to Alice Ivy, her surrogate brother George, and her friends Sadie Rose, Mary Grace, and Christina. From small-town childhood adventures in the 1950s, to high school, college, and the first tastes of independence in the 1960s, the characters romp merrily through a nostalgic Southern landscape the author clearly knows well. The new book, “Normal,” follows the same gang of friends into the post-college years, as they start their first jobs and learn how to make it on their own in the big city of Atlanta in the early 1970s. Readers of “Normal” are promised “a killing, a ghost, a missing identity, stretching a dollar, a cheating husband who gets a taste of his own medicine, and a disagreeable child who kicks Donnie Earl one time too many.”
Miss Stella is always an audience favorite at the library, for her outrageous style and for the way her expressive reading brings the comical characters and situations to life.
The event is free and open to the public, and sponsored by the Fayette County Public Library and the Friends of the Fayette County Public Library.
