Tyrone Founders Day Festival starts Friday

Tyrone will have their annual Founders Day Festival, Sept. 16-18 at Handley Park in Tyrone. This year’s festival is the 35th for the town and will include a carnival, vendors, entertainment and fireworks. There will be a car show at Shamrock Park and a parade Saturday morning at 11 a.m. starting on Senoia Rd., traveling along Arrowood Dr. to Handley Rd.

The first Founders Day festival was in 1977 and 1,000 people came out to celebrate. There was a street dance, arts and crafts displays and more. The event has grown each year and this year’s festival also comes several weeks after Tyrone marked its Centennial.

Friday night’s activities will feature the carnival from 6-11 p.m. and performances starting at 6 p.m. with Tyrone Tempos followed by Drew Vickers at 6:45 and the Money for Nothing Band from 7-11 p.m. Saturday begins with the Tyrone Elementary Fun Run at 7 a.m., the parade at 11 a.m., the car show from 10 a.m.-3 p.m., the carnival, in two sessions, 12-5 p.m. and 6-11 p.m., awards at 1 p.m., jazzercise at 12:45 p.m., Zumba at 1:30 p.m., the Ice Cream Contest at 2 p.m., Rowena’s irish Dancers at 2:30 p.m., Dance Like The Stars at 3 p.m., various entertainment beginning at 3:30 p.m, the Hudson Road Band from 7-11 p.m. and fireworks at 9 p.m. On Sunday, the carnival lasts from 12-6 p.m., Tymbral performs at noon, there is a scavenger hunt at 1 p.m., meet and greet with sports figures at 2 p.m., Minute to Win It contests at 2;30 p.m. Magician Ken Scott at 3 p.m., contests and karaoke from 4-6 p.m. and a one pitch softball tournament throughout the day.

There will also be karaoke, family games, autographs from famous sports figures and more.
