Answers coming soon for Hwy. 54W traffic snarl

A $70,000 study expected to provide long-range solutions for heavy traffic on Ga. Highway 54 West in Peachtree City is nearing completion.

Peachtree City Manager Jim Pennington told the City Council Thursday night that the city’s consulting engineering firm, Pond and Company, is expected to have a report ready by the end of this month.

Pond has been collecting traffic data not just on the highway itself but also on feeder roads including Ga. Highway 74 in both directions as well as MacDuff Parkway and others, Pennington said.

Pond also has worked with the Georgia Department of Transportation on the project, Pennington noted.

With the conglomeration of commercial activity along Hwy. 54, and the fact that the highway is one of the few east-west links between Fayette and Coweta counties, it’s little surprise that the roadway is often clogged ... even during non-peak commuting times and on the weekends as well.

Among the potential solutions expected to be considered by the report is the removal of the median to allow for additional lanes of traffic.

Pennington noted that there are a number of projects in the area that are tied to the results of the city’s corridor study, but council will get the first look at the report once it is available.

In the meantime, GDOT is also working on implementation of an advanced traffic light timing system, Pennington said. That system uses real-time data from traffic sensors on the road, and once certain volumes are reached, the system will automatically switch over to a different timing pattern to help flush out traffic, state officials have explained.

This new system is expected to maximize the efficiency of the existing traffic lanes, but GDOT officials have cautioned that it will not be able to cure all of Hwy. 54’s traffic woes.

Once more information on GDOT’s progress is available, it will be forwarded to council members and noted on the city’s website, Pennington added.

Traffic Light Stops Working???

Just got the notice about the light at Huddleston & Hwy 54 West.

"Malfunctioning to the extent that the entire system needs to be replaced. The light is currently set to manual."

Manual?? What the crap does that mean, manual? Some GDOT worker sitting in a lawn chair 24/7 pushing buttons and waving you through?

Let's all understand.

We have a 70K waste of taxpayer money traffic study that we have no results from over a month beyond when promised.

We have a broken traffic light at a major intersection.

We have the same major state highway which has more cracks than asphalt with no paving scheduled for at least a year or more.

Hey city manager, Pond & Co., GDOT, big haired-mayor...hmmm...anything else left for you to take credit for here?

Traffic study results flawed. Feds require more testing.

That would be the headline if the federal government were in charge. They would say that the tests were not valid and ask for a do-over because the traffic light wasn't working during the last few weeks of the test.

I don't know why we are spending $70,000 when everyone already knows the conclusion - that we need more lanes to accommodate the current and future volume of traffic. Whether you widen 54, extend TDK or connect Maduff to 74 north, lanes have to be added. I suppose you could do flyover lanes for thru traffic, but so few people would actually understand it. I guess the council just wants a study to point to when they vote for something, but the study seems like a waste of money - and an awful lot of money at that.

rwm- I see a pattern developing

here. Notice how GDOT has no money to do major projects..so they say. I personally feel that is a political fancy pants dance going on between the state and feds and the ever benevolent Congress. People are driving less, way less as the price of gas rises. Thus, gas tax revenue is down. So, the low man on the totem pole (local govt...us) are told GDOT cannot do more projects. Of course, uh, if you pay this ransom, bribe, kickback, supplement (pick the word of your choice), in the form of a traffic study or county SPLOST dollars to start rights of way process, we might be able to move you up on the list. So, the county or the city or both, in our case, pony up big bucks to get the ball rolling. BOC for the 74/I85 intersection and Vanna, Terry and Kimmy for 54 corridor.

Who thinks the gas tax is going to be raised, if ever, before the election in November? Not me. Barry (aka the feds) hopes to get away with what he did in the last 2 prezbo elections. Wait for Jimmah Cahtahs's grandson to take over the state and then he will announce all sorts of fed dollars that will flow into the state of Ga. to help with GDOT projects.

Hey, we could just go the route of Clayton County and invite MARTA in, right? As that old man Rev. Lowery said the other day, "Transit is a civil right. As we celebrate 50 years of civil rights in America, don't let them take away your right to vote for good public transportation. Come out tomorrow." Tomorrow is today and Clayton BOC just approved a referendum vote for a new penny tax to extend MARTA trains and buses into Clayton.

So, two lessons here. Repeat after me.

One. Transit is a civil right. Got it?

Two. If you don't hand over your local tax dollars, we will ignore your traffic needs and you can sit in bottleneck traffic on crumbly roads till the cows come home.

Flyover lanes...yes, I like it!

Whaddya say, TDK?

All of a sudden, a TDK Extension - giving motorists one way to bypass 54/74 and get into Coweta County via TDK Drive - looks better and better all the time. Tell me again why everyone was so against this?

There are no good solutions to this traffic bottleneck, unless a north "bypass" can be made from Hwy 74 by cutting across from Kedron Road, straight west across to the Fischer Road area.
