Five 4-H’ers from Fayette County 4-H tested their forestry knowledge on August 31st at
the Area 4-H Forestry Field Day Competition held at Camp Westminster in Rockdale
County.
At the competition, all contestants identified native tree species, insect species, and
diseases, as well as, measured tree diameter and merchantable height, and showcased
their compass and pacing skills.
The Junior team (4 th -8 th grades) received second place. Team members were Lesley
Nichols, Jovie Ruf, and Bryce Smith.
Additionally, many 4-H’ers were recognized for their individual scores. Bryce Smith was
recognized as the 1 st place highest individual score for the Junior competition. Kareem
El-Gayyar was recognized as the 2nd place highest individual score for the Senior
competition.
Team members prepared for the event by attending classes and workshops instructed
by Candace Goldbeck, 4-H Youth Development Agent.
