March 23 Deadline to vote Peachtree City as Most Patriotic . . . Plus, Memorial Day ceremony, update on Oasis Bowling Center, summer camps, July 4th T-Shirts, Hurricane Hunters, and more . . .

Help put Peachtree City on the Map Today!
Peachtree City has been included among about 50 cities nominated for “Most Patriotic” in the Rand McNally/USA Today “Best of the Road” Tour. Vote for PTC by registering at www.BestoftheRoad.com and selecting Peachtree City under the Most Patriotic section. The deadline to vote is Monday, May 23 (TODAY). Rand McNally will choose 20 towns in each of five categories and make them stops on their 3-week road rally in June. The best town in each category will be featured in Rand McNally’s atlases, maps, and GPS units, on the USA TODAY travel web site, and in a national media promotion.

Peachtree City Memorial Day Remembrance next Monday
Peachtree City will hold its annual Memorial Day rememberance on Monday, May 30. The Golf cart procession from The Gathering Place begins at 8:30 a.m., arriving at City Hall at about 9:00. The official program at the City Hall Veterans Memoral begins at 9:00 a.m. The guest speaker will Pearl Harbor survivor Roy E. Oasis Bowling Center Withdraws Rezoning Application
City staff received an e-mail over the weekend from representatives of Oasis Bowling Center indicating they would be withdrawing their rezoning application for a bowling center within the Wilshire Village retail development. This item has been removed from the Planning Commission agenda.

Meet the Hurricane Hunters and Tour the National Weather Service on June 4
The Air Force Reserve “Hurricane Hunters” (a.k.a. 53rd Weather Reconnaissance Squadron) are bringing their special hurricane-penetrating Lockheed-Martin WC-130J to Atlanta Regional Airport-Falcon Field in Peachtree City on Saturday, June 4. The crew will conduct tours of the aircraft between 11:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. The visit is sponsored by the National Weather Service, which will also host an Open House at their Peachtree City office as well. The 2011 4th of July T-Shirts are now on sale for $10. Shirts are available at City Hall and at the Peachtree City Visitors Center (McIntosh Trail next to The Fred box office).

Sign Up Now for the HeroBox Golf Tournament on August 26
Sponsorship opportunities and registration are underway for the “Fairways of Freedom” charity golf tournament to sponsor local non-profit organization, HeroBox, in their efforts to support our deployed service members. While most care package programs are generic, HeroBox gives deployed service members the ability to request specific items they need and provides Americans with a tangible way to directly support the troops. Project Updates:

City Hall Painting & Sealing –-The contractor will begin the repainting and resealing process for City Hall on Monday, May 23, beginning with pressure washing of the building. Painting will begin on Tuesday, May 31. PEDESTRIAN ALERT – During the pressure washing process, the stairs between City Hall and the PTC Library will need to be closed for half a day for pedestrian safety.

Library Lower Level Entrance CLOSED for Repairs – the lower level entrance to the PTC Library remains closed due to cracks in the masonry. The area has been barricaded for safety reasons until repairs are completed. Please use the main entrance to the Library upstairs until further notice.

Rite Aid /Whitlock Ellis Entrance from Peachtree Parkway will have intermittent CLOSURES during construction of the Walgreens at Highway 54 and Peachtree Parkway. Access from Highway 54 will remain open. Path access via the Walgreens site remains closed.

Senior Health & Fitness Expo – Wednesday, May 25, 10:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m., at the Fayette Senior Services Life Enrichment Center, 4 Center Drive in Fayetteville. This free event is part of Older Americans Month and will feature exercise demonstrations, mini-workshops, free health screenings, assessments, and information on ways to improve overall health and wellness. All American 5K Run/Walk – Saturday, May 28, 8:00 a.m., at the Frederick Brown, Jr. Amphitheater. The PTC Running Club is hosting this Run/Walk/Phantom in honor of Ashley Kurpiel. All application fees and donations will go directly to the International FOP Association to help find a cure for this rare disease. Participants will receive an All-American race T-shirt and an American flag to start the Memorial Day Weekend celebrations.

Memorial Day – City Offices Closed – Monday, May 30. City administrative offices, the Library, The Gathering Place, and Kedron Fieldhouse, will be closed on Monday, May 30. Kedron pools will be open from 1:00 – 6:00 p.m.
