About 1,000 children and teachers from across Georgia and South Carolina
competed in STEAMIFY on Oct. 26, including students from Flat Rock Middle School in Fayette County.

Flat Rock students carried home two awards from the competition.

Students competed at Augusta University in Augusta, Ga., in the annual STEAMIFY competition for fourth through eighth graders on Saturday, Oct. 26. More than 150 teams registered, from across the state of Georgia and South Carolina, in the arts and sciences, to build community through creating responsible choices regarding technological advances.

Each team competed in a series of prepared challenges to present their solutions to problems in categories like dance, engineering, visual arts and rocketry. Teams also participated in a blind spontaneous challenge that was administered the day of the competition.

The Flat Rock Middle School team won first place in the Middle School Dance category, coached by Jeff Eller. Second place went to Evans Middle School in Columbia County, and third place went to Spirit Creek Middle School in Richmond County.

Flat Rock Middle School also took third place in the Aeronautical Engineering category, again coached by Jeff Eller. First place went to Greenbrier Middle School in Columbia County, which sent multiple teams, and also took third place in the category.
