Kaitlyn Capehart from Troop 12301 in Fayetteville has been a Girl Scout since kindergarten. She had always had a desire to earn the Silver Award, the second highest award in Girl Scouting, but could never decide on a project worthy to meet the criteria of 50 plus hours, sustainability and something she cares deeply about.  She knew she was running out of time.

That is when she learned of a need at Providence United Methodist Church Preschool in Fayetteville. The preschool library was in great need of an update. The library was created in 2008, but since then hundreds of books were bought or donated without being recorded into the library’s bibliography. Teachers had trouble finding the books they needed to teach the requested themes to their students.

Kaitlyn decided to solve the problem by dedicating her summer to updating the library. Reading has always been a passion for Kaitlyn, so a book project sounded like something she could do. The project included organizing hundreds of books, labeling each one by a theme, recording them in a binder and a backup flash drive, and purchasing new baskets to store the books. New themes were also added. In addition to the books, videos were also updated.

Kaitlyn’s project grew so large that three other Girl Scouts from the area benefitted by helping complete the project. One of the girls also earned her Silver Award and the other two earned the Service to Girl Scouting Pin!

What a great way to serve the community and be a sister to every Girl Scout!  Congratulations Kaitlyn!  You have made a difference to our community!
