Fayette County Public Library, Fayetteville

Fayette County Public Library invites the public to experience an evening of readers theatre on Tuesday, Oct. 30 at 7 p.m., with a performance of “Frankenstein” by members of the Fayette County High School Thespian Society. Admission to the performance is free. Seating is available on a first-come, first-served basis.

Mary Shelley published her novel, “Frankenstein,” in 1818, and throughout this year readers all over the world have been celebrating the 200th anniversary of this gothic horror masterpiece. “Frankenstein” tells the story of Victor Frankenstein, a Swiss scientist obsessed by the quest to create life itself. He plunders graveyards for the raw materials to build his creation, which he shocks into life by electricity. Rejected by the horrified Victor and denied human companionship at every turn, the botched Creature sets out to destroy his maker and all that he holds dear.

The readers theatre format provides a complete spoken-word performance of the “Frankenstein” story, specially adapted for this type of presentation. The staging includes neither props, costumes, nor scenery, but the actors will be well rehearsed, and can be expected to bring all their talent and training to the task of bringing the narration and the characters to life for the audience. The script is aimed at adults and teenagers, and the performance should be about an hour long. Free coffee and cookies will be available while supplies last.

“Fayette on the Page: One Book, One Community,” launched in 2008, is an annual countywide reading and discussion initiative for adults. This year’s program kicked off in early September with an all-ages FrankenFest program featuring music and hands-on creative activities for adults, kids, and teens. Other free “Fayette on the Page” activities at the library this year have included a “Mad Science Cinema” film series, creative writing and craft workshops, and a group book discussion of “Frankenstein” by Mary Shelley. All “Fayette on the Page” programming is open to the public and free of charge, thanks to the generous support of the Friends of the Fayette County Public Library.

The Fayette County Public Library is located behind the Fayette County administration complex in downtown Fayetteville, at the southwest corner of Highways 85 and 54.  For more information, contact the library at 770-461-8841.
