The Twilight Theatre Apprentice Company is a local theater training program for middle school and high school students. Recently, Carolyn Balkovetz, a student at Starr’s Mill High School and senior apprentice with the Twilight Theatre, was selected to attend six-week vocal training program at the Brevard Music Festival in North Carolina. The vocal students enjoyed daily classes in acting, yoga, diction, music literature, music theory, and had the honor of auditing rehearsals of the Janiec Opera Company.
As an apprentice with The Twilight Theatre, Balkovetz was the music director for the 2009 Christmas youth production of “Babes In Toyland” at the Fayetteville Depot. She also enjoyed playing the role of Ouiser in the senior apprentice show “Steel Magnolias” in March 2010.
This spring, Balkovetz won the regional Classical Singers competition at Spivey Hall and traveled to compete in the second round in New York City in May. There she was accepted into three internationally prestigious summer music festivals; Interlochen, Washington, D.C. National Opera and the festival she chose, Brevard. She was offered scholarships to all three festivals.
Balkovetz played Agatha in last year’s Starr’s Mill High School production of “Guys and Dolls.” She looks forward to another year in the Twilight Theatre senior apprentice program and to performing with her school choruses. Balkovetz is a senior at Starr’s Mill this year and plans to study Vocal Performance / Opera in college.
The Twilight Theatre apprentice program allows students to supplement their school experiences with additional opportunities in performance and training in all technical aspects of theater.
