The city of Fayetteville is planning to build a new veterans memorial at the Patriot Park area off Redwine and Old Senoia roads.
A schematic of the proposal shows a 10-foot tall obelisk with the emblems of each branch of the armed services. But the true feature will be the two memorial walls on either side, which will list each local veteran who was killed in action.
The obelisk and walls will be made of a black granite that will be reflective, similar to the material used on the Vietnam wall.
One wall will be solely dedicated to those who died in the Civil War, as those 380 veterans make up the largest amount of Fayette’s war dead. The remainder will be on the other wall to memorialize those who died in other wars ranging from the Mexican War to World War I, the Korean War, World War II, the Vietnam war, and the current wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.
Fayetteville City Councilman Larry Dell, himself a Vietnam veteran, has undertaken the fund-raising for the project which will need roughly $100,000 for completion.
Donations to the effort are tax deductible and those who donate $5,000 or more will be recognized on a special plaque placed at the base of the flagpole.
Those wishing to donate may send a check made out to “The City of Fayetteville Veterans Memorial” to the city at 240 South Glynn St., Fayetteville, Ga., 30214.
The memorial will be built immediately adjacent to the walking path at Patriot Park. The location is convenient because of the significant amount of parking next door at the Fayette County Recreation Department.
There will be no public funds expended on the project beyond the donation of the land from the city, Dell said.
The memorial will be dedicated on May 30, 2011 in observance of Memorial Day.
