A Fayette County retired Marine Corps sergeant is among the 17 military veterans to be inducted into this year’s Georgia Military Veterans Hall of Fame. The announcement was made by 2013 founder Col. Paul Longgrear (USA-Ret) of Pine Mountain.
“Their framed photos, together with those of the 49 previously selected members, will be prominently displayed on the heroes’ wall of the Floyd Building in the State Capitol complex,” he said.
First Sgt. Curtis Clay Williamson (USMC-Ret) was selected into this elite club for his heroics in Viet Nam when, as a leatherneck corporal, he came face-to-face with the enemy during the capture of a communist mountain fortress. He was awarded the Silver Star for his gallantry.
“I was quite surprised when told of my selection. Since I was not familiar with the Hall of Fame, nonetheless I accept this honor with great humility,” said Williamson, now an associate real estate broker.
According to Hall of Fame Chairman of the Board of Governors Col. Rick White (USA-Ret) of Atlanta, nominees must have ties to Georgia and qualify in one of 3 categories: valor for heroic action in combat; outstanding achievement while in service, or significant local, state or national contributions after leaving active duty.
This year’s honorees will be inducted at the Fourth Annual Georgia Military Veterans Hall of Fame Ceremony and Banquet Saturday, Nov. 5 at 6 p.m. at St. Luke Ministry Center, 301 11th Street in Columbus. This annual event is open to the public.
