The Coweta Community Foundation hosted its first Saturday Down South Sporting Clays and Southern Supper May 21 at Blalock Lakes, and Foundation board chair Ginger Jackson Queener said the group couldn’t be more pleased with the results.
“After many weeks of planning, it went off beautifully,” Queener said. “So many people came to us and said how much they enjoyed it. Participants and sponsors alike said they would be back next year, and our CCF team of board members, volunteers, planners, our caterer and vendors did an outstanding job.”
Winners of this year’s sporting clays competition were:
• First Place Team (pictured above) — Welden Financial (James Welden, James Rutland, Mike Jackson, Gary DeGeorge)
• Second Place Team — Harbin Agency & Strathmore Floors (Brad Brezina, Steve Clifton, Cortney Lyle, Shane Lyle)
• Highest Shooter — James Rutland
• Lowest Scoring team — Progressive Heating & Air (Judi Alvey, Kim Melhouse-Guerra, Samantha Brazie, Maureen Coates)
Co-chairs for the event were CCF board member Susan Paulk and her husband, John Paulk; CCF board member James Welden and his wife, Kelley Welden; and CCF board member Will Conoly and his wife, Meredith Conoly.
“It was truly a southern event—sporting clays, dinner on the back porch and beautiful weather,” said Susan Paulk.
James Welden said he found it exciting to be able to bring back the sporting clay shoot and dinner social, which was put on hold in 2009 because of the economy.
“Saturday Down South was a big hit,” Welden said. “Everyone involved went above and beyond to make it the success it was. The shoot was filled with fun competition and a lot of smiles and comradery. Later that evening, we were able to enjoy a few signature drinks and slow down and enjoy the music and some great food. It was a great group of people joined by the common bond of our community’s support of the Foundation. It was a lot of fun, and I can’t wait till next year!”
Will Conoly said that he, too, was “very excited about the overwhelming support from the community” for this first annual event. “It was a great honor for Meredith and me to serve as co-chairs, and we look forward to building on the momentum produced by this event for the Community Foundation.”
