Art Farm at Serenbe collaborates with Flux Projects to bring Serenbe’s first rotating art exhibit to Deer Hollow Art Park; more than 150 handcrafted blue paper birds now animate the trees. Talk will be followed by a public reception.

CHATTAHOOCHEE HILLS, Ga. (Oct. 16, 2026) — Art Farm at Serenbe invites the public to meet artist Dorothy O’Connor for a free talk at 1 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 24, beneath her installation “Flock of Birds” in Deer Hollow Art Park. The talk is open to all with no RSVP required, and a reception with light bites and drinks will follow.

“Flock of Birds” arrived at Serenbe through a collaboration with Flux Projects, whose partnership made it possible to bring O’Connor’s murmuration-inspired installation to the community. Originally commissioned by Flux Projects, the work was installed in Deer Hollow’s lower clearing this fall as the art park’s first rotating exhibit and remains on view through January 2027.

Drawing on the collective movement of bird murmurations, O’Connor crafted each of the more than 150 blue birds from handmade Nepalese Lokta paper and coated them in resin to withstand the weather. Some carry twigs, seedpods and pinecones gathered from the landscape, giving the impression that the flock is building a life among the branches.

“I find it delightful when large flocks of red-winged blackbirds and starlings migrate through Atlanta,” O’Connor said. “The moment a grounded feeding flock is surprised and they all seemingly lift into the air at once, creating a mini murmuration, is exhilarating and beautiful.

“In spring and fall, it’s also a fairly common occurrence and, for me, always sparks joy. My initial hope in creating this flock and reinstalling it over a walking path in Deer Hollow was to recreate and share a bit of that wonder and joy with passersby who encounter it.”

In conversation with Monica Olsen of Serenbe, O’Connor will discuss the ideas behind the work, her process for making and weatherproofing each bird, and what it has meant to see the piece live outdoors among the trees. An audience Q&A will follow.

O’Connor works across photography, installation and public art. She is a Hambidge Fellow and a former artist-in-residence at Cheekwood in Nashville, and her work is held in the permanent collections of the Museum of Contemporary Art of Georgia (MOCA GA) and Cheekwood.

“‘Flock of Birds’ beautifully reflects our vision for Deer Hollow Art Park,” said Ali Spain, an Art Farm board member. “It’s a place where art meets nature — where creativity becomes part of the woods and part of the experience of Serenbe. Dorothy’s work shows how art can live within the environment and invite people to slow down, look up, and discover something unexpected.”

Visitors can make a day of it: That evening at 7:30 p.m., Art Farm presents An Evening of Poetry with Anis Mojgani and Special Guest Sarah Kay. Serenbe’s restaurants, shops and The Inn at Serenbe are steps away.
