A former longtime Coweta County Sheriff’s Office school resource officer has been indicted on three counts of child molestation and two counts of enticing a minor following an investigation that began with an anonymous complaint in April 2025.

Michael McGuffey, who held the rank of sergeant when he resigned, had served as the school resource officer at Smokey Road Middle School from 2015 until his resignation in April 2025.

According to the Coweta County Sheriff’s Office, the agency received an anonymous tip on April 3, 2025, alleging that McGuffey had made inappropriate comments toward several female students and had exchanged text messages with at least one female student while employed by the sheriff’s office.

McGuffey was placed on administrative leave on April 4, 2025, while the sheriff’s office conducted an internal investigation.

During that investigation, allegations of possible criminal activity surfaced, according to the sheriff’s office. The criminal portion of the investigation was then turned over to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation.

Within weeks of being placed on administrative leave, and while the investigation was still underway, McGuffey resigned from the Coweta County Sheriff’s Office on April 29, 2025.

McGuffey had a lengthy history with the department. He was employed by the sheriff’s office from May 3, 1993, until July 8, 2010, and returned on September 9, 2013, remaining there until his resignation in 2025.

In addition to his decade at Smokey Road Middle School, McGuffey previously served as a school resource officer at Madras Middle School. Exact dates for that assignment were not available, though the sheriff’s office believes he served there from approximately 2003 to 2006.

The GBI continued its criminal investigation, and a Coweta County grand jury indicted McGuffey on August 12, 2026, on three counts of child molestation and two counts of enticing a minor.

McGuffey turned himself in at the Coweta County Jail on August 13.

The sheriff’s office said questions concerning the criminal investigation should be directed to the GBI. The GBI told The Citizen that it would not be making any statements regarding the case at this time.
