Joel Jay Bass, age 77, of College Park

Mr. Joel Jay “Sam” Bass, age 77, of College Park passed away Monday, July 21, 2014.

He was born to the late Lucille McFadden Bass and Alden G. Bass. Mr. Bass was a Graduate of Cadiz High (Class of 1954) and a United States Air Force Veteran (1954-1957). He graduated Pittsburgh Institute of Aeronautics in 1959 and started working at Eastern Airlines (LaGuardia Airport) the same year. In 1960 he was awarded the Presidential Award for saving a Lockheed Electra from a fire at a terminal gate. He was an accomplished private pilot and rebuilder of general aviation aircraft.

He was preceded in death by his step father, Edward Hanna; son, John Kelly Bass; sister, Leora Bass Hileman and is survived by his wife, Shirley Lucas Bass; son, Samuel Craig Bass and his wife Teresa of Sharpsburg; grandsons, Jay Edward Bass, James Kelly Bass.

A memorial service will be held Saturday, August 9, 2014 at 2 p.m. in the Chapel of Parrott Funeral Home with Dr. Jimmy Orr officiating. Those wishing may sign the online guestbook at www.parrottfuneralhome.com.
