Peachtree City UPDATES – April 12

I apologize for missing last week, but here are some of the issues and activities in PTC this week:

Where’s Nessie, the Glenloch Village Sign?
If you’ve driven past the intersection of Peachtree Parkway and Highway 54, you may have noticed that the Glenloch Village sign has been dismantled. Following the DOT’s installation of the pedestrian crossings, the sign was blocking drivers’ view of traffic on Highway 54. The sign will need to be relocated further back from the intersection. However, no funding is currently available to do so. The City is updating the designs for all the villages, which will require Council approval. After that has been completed and funding is again available, the sign will be restored.

Spring Yard & Garden Show CANCELLED
Unfortunately, due to limited sign-up by appropriate vendors, the Spring Yard and Garden Show on April 24 has been cancelled. Staff will look at restoring this annual event once the economy improves.

Be a Star at the Fred – Open Mic Night on May 7
The Frederick Brown, Jr. Amphitheater will host Open Mic Night beginning at 7:00 p.m. on Friday, May 7. Watchers welcome. Participants will compete for the chance to open for one of the concerts at The Fred. Limited space available. Application fee is $10 for soloists and $20 for bands or groups of 2 or more. More information and application . . .

April 15 City Council Agenda
This Thursday, Council will consider prohibiting golf cart parking on certain paths near McIntosh High School, establishing criteria for personal care homes in residential neighborhoods, and requiring registration of vacant structures with the City. Residents can watch the meeting live at www.peachtree-city.org/video or play the meeting on demand afterward. View full agenda and packet . . .

Council Viewpoints
Following discussions at the City Council Retreat, the Mayor and Council have been provided with pages on the City website to express their personal views on issues facing Peachtree City. Residents can reach these viewpoints via the Mayor and Council Page (link on the main page). Mayor Haddix has posted his views on communication at www.peachtree-city.org/don .

Question of the Week – With all the rain we’ve had this year, are there any watering restrictions?
Peachtree City and Fayette County have year-round watering restrictions. Because we are currently in a non-drought response level, outdoor watering is only limited to the odd/even schedule for watering of yards and landscapes, sprinkler systems, washing vehicles, pressure washing, etc. Odd numbered street addresses may use outdoor water on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Sundays. Even numbered street addresses may use water Mondays, Wednesdays, and Saturdays. No outdoor watering is permitted on Fridays. Additional restrictions apply during droughts. More information . . .

Volunteers Needed – Library Commission
Peachtree City is accepting applications for terms on the Peachtree City Library Commission. The deadline to apply is May 7, 5:00 p.m., at City Hall. To serve on the Library Commission, applicants must have lived in Peachtree City for at least six months. The Mayor and Council appoint Library Commission members to a three-year term. More information & application . . .

Green Market at The Avenue on Thursdays
The Avenue at Highways 54 and 74 will again host a Green Market every Thursday through August 5 from 3:00 – 7:00 p.m. The Green Market will feature fresh, locally grown, sustainably produced food and products. Enjoy children’s entertainment, cooking demonstrations, educational seminars and family activities throughout the season.

Golf Cart Rules Reminder – Steep Fines for Violating Age Restrictions
Peachtree City’s signature golf carts are a lot of fun and are very popular with our younger residents and visitors. Even though adults don’t necessarily need a driver’s license to operate a cart, there are restrictions on drivers, and the ordinances impose steep fines on cart owners for violations. Younger drivers can also find their ability to get a drivers license impacted for violations on golf carts. The age requirements are:

Carts may ONLY be driven by:
– Those age 16 or older, with or without drivers license (unless the license has been suspended or revoked)
– 15-years-olds with a valid learners permit (unless suspended or revoked) in their possession. If unaccompanied by a parent/grandparent, or person 18 or older, they may drive accompanied by up to one other person who is at least 15 years old, or by up to three immediate family members.
– Persons 15 years old with NO learners permit must be accompanied in the front seat by a parent, grandparent, legal guardian, or a person age 18 or older with a valid driver’s license.
– Persons 12, 13 & 14 years old must be accompanied in the front seat by a parent, grandparent, or legal guardian.
– No one under 12 years of age may drive a cart.
– No one may sit in the driver’s lap.

Base fines for violations range from $250 for the first offense to $1000 and loss of cart registration for the third offense ($360 – $1,331, once mandatory court fees are added). Review all Peachtree City path and cart rules . . .

Important Ordinance Changes to help keep neighborhoods safe and clean
This year, Peachtree City has updated several ordinances that Code Enforcement deals with, particularly in the summer months.
Parking on the grass – Vehicles should be parked on a driveway, roadway, or parking lot. Any vehicle (automobiles, motorcycles, and golf carts) on an unpaved surface must be on an area of gravel or other approved all weather surface at least three inches deep and at least nine ft. by 18 ft. and large enough that the entire vehicle is situated over the area. No weeds or other plant materials should grow up through the parking pad.
High grass and weeds – All grass and weeds must be maintained at a height of no greater than eight inches on your entire property, including landscaped areas. This does not apply to watershed and non-disturb buffer areas.
Notices & grace periods – The City is now only required to issue ONE courtesy notice of violation per property each year for violations of our health and sanitation rules (trash on property, inoperable vehicles, high grass and weeds, illegal burning, and accumulations of brush). Residents who have received one notice during the year can receive citations for future violations during the same year.
Inoperable golf carts – These are now included as inoperable vehicles. Carts and other cars that are not properly registered, stickered, broken down, disassembled, have flat tires, or are otherwise inoperable are considered rubbish and must be stored in an enclosed garage or removed from the property.

Project UPDATES
CSX Bridge / Path Connections – Paving is complete, but the paths remain CLOSED until the additional required safety railing is installed.
Paschall / Willow / Hwy 74 Tunnel & Path Connections – Construction begins this month.
Huddleston Pond Playground & Benches relocation – The contractor could not complete the project last week, but will be relocating the equipment this week.
Wisdom Road Stormwater Project – Construction continues through May, with intermittent closures of one lane of the roadway.

Thanks!
