The McIntosh girls and boys soccer teams opened the first round of the 2013 state playoffs with a dominating doubleheader performance at home Tuesday night.
The girls defeated the Patriots of Northside High School 6-0, and the boys dominated the Thomas County Yellow Jackets in a 10-0 victory.
The girls started strong, scoring four of their six goals in the first half. Gabby Seiler set the tone for the Chiefs knocking in the first goal with 34 minutes to play in the first half.
Amy Brewer scored next for the Chiefs and Seiler added another goal on a penalty kick. Amanda Batholomew scored two consecutive goals to push the McIntosh margin to 5-0 and Jackie Gray added another goal at the 4 minute mark of the second half to ice the game 6-0.
“I think overall it was a good first outing for us. I was pleased with the way the girls communicated and moved the ball around the field,” head coach Marcia Clark said.
The boys team started right where the girls left off. Chris Perez scored the first goal at the 38:00 mark of the first half to put the Chiefs up 1-0. Perez and Carson Brooks combined for the first four goals of the game, scoring two each to give McIntosh a 4-0 lead at the end of the first half.
The Yellow Jackets struggled to move the ball past the midfielders and were never able to muster a shot on goal during the entire game.
“We pride ourselves on our defense; I think we have only given up three shots on goal this season,” said McIntosh head coach Bunky Colvin.
The Chiefs poured it on in the second half as Vojtech Martinek, Salomon Lorenzano and Weston Taylor scored goals to extended the lead to 7-0. Lorenzano set the single-season school record for assists during the game,
Ian Berryman added back-to-back goals within a minute of each other to give the Chiefs a commanding 9-0 lead. Dimitris Yokaris ended the game on a mercy rule goal 10-0.
The girls will play in the second round of the playoffs May 7 and the boys will play May 8.
