A Sandy Creek High School student is in custody after authorities discovered a gun in his vehicle on campus.
According to the Fayette County Sheriff’s Office jail log, Jawru Sumbundu, 17, of Fayetteville was arrested April 11 shortly before noon at Sandy Creek High School. He is charged with possession of a weapon on school property, a felony, according to the report.
A statement by school officials confirmed the incident without revealing the student’s name, but Sumbundu was the only person listed on the jail log matching the details of the crime.
A letter to families of Sandy Creek students from principal Tosha Oliver was sent home April 11.
“Today we found a loaded handgun in the vehicle of one of our students during a drug search,” she wrote. “Our school resource officer secured the weapon. The student was removed from school and has been taken into custody by law enforcement.”
Oliver also credited the parent of the suspect with helping bring this to light.
“I want to recognize the quick action of the parent of this student who self-reported that her son could potentially be in possession of an illegal substance which is what led to our initial search and ultimately the discovery of a weapon in his vehicle.
Oliver urged parents to discuss the incident with their children and emphasize the fact that bringing a weapon to school is illegal. She also stressed for students “the importance of telling a trusted adult if they have information that could threaten the safety of our campus. It takes all of us working together to keep our school safe.”
