It’s a different kind of scam where a person posing as a health inspector demands a free meal at a local restaurant. That is what has happened recently in Fayette County when someone has tried to run the scam. Meantime, Georgia Dept. of Public Health’s District 4 spokesperson Hayla Hall requested that restaurant owners and managers not be taken in by the deception.
Hall on Wednesday said Dist. 4 Public Health has recently received reports of an individual posing as a health inspector. The notice to be aware of the scam was sent to all Dist. 4 counties even though the only instances discovered thus far occurred at Fayette County restaurants.
“This person has approached several restaurant owners or managers demanding free meals,” Hall said. ”We want the pubic to know that health inspectors are professional and do not conduct themselves that way. Even when on duty in businesses such as restaurants, we show identification and we don’t demand nor will we accept a free meal. We’re there to do our job and we expect nothing in return.”
Hall said that restaurants are encouraged to call their local health department to obtain the names of local health inspectors.
“If at any time you are unsure of a health inspector’s identity, please call your local Environmental Health office,” she said.
Health inspectors are responsible for enforcing local and state regulations that pertain to the sanitation of food and water.
